EASIS Drive Check is a very powerful yet simple tool to check the health of any external hard drive or even a USB Flash drive. Checking your drives regularly will make sure that you know when and why a hard drive or a USB drive could fail and then take measures to backup data from the storage device which is not functioning properly.
EASIS Drive Check can perform two test to diagnose media failure ahead of time and give you some time to backup your data. If you’re using an internal hard drive, you can read out the values of S.M.A.R.T. which is an intelligent system of the hard drive to check its health included in most modern hard drives. EASIS Drive Check can check more than 40 values for you so that you may be able to decide whether the hard drive needs replacement or is in good condition.
The S.M.A.R.T. value check can be performed on the S.M.A.R.T. enabled devices which does not usually include USB drives etc. You can read about how you can interpret the values provided by EASIS Drive Check and then analyze the health of your media. It will automatically detect the media connected to the system. Double clicking on any of the media drive will take you to the two button interface. One button is for requesting S.M.A.R.T. value of the drive if it supports it and the second button is for Each Sector Surface Test.
While usage of EASIS Drive Check is very simple, it can only be used on Intel systems. The supported Operating Systems include Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. If you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you’ll need to open EASIS Drive Check with administrative privileges. If you’re having any difficulty in running the app, please let us know through comments below.
We have covered some data recovery tools for Windows in the past. All those tools were 3rd party tools because there is very little we can do with the default recovery tools from Microsoft like Windows backup and recovery tool.
Microsoft has finally gone on to release their own recovery tool which will be able to recover data from a corrupted PC which is not able tool start. The tool is called Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper. The tool can be burned on a CD/DVD or written on a USB flash drive and then you can boot from the CD/DVD or USB drive in order to recover the system. The tool is still in beta but worth a try.
The basic purpose of Standalone System Sweeper is to scan for and remove the malware that has made the system unbootable. Please note that this tool is not a replacement for a regular antivirus program but should only be used for emergency purposes. You can use Microsoft Security Essentials for proper virus and malware protection.
How to use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper
Using Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is simple but you need to have an internet connection in order to burn the tool to CD/DVD or a USB flash drive. Let’s talk about how to successfully recover a system using Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.
In the first step, you’ll need to figure out whether the corrupted system was running a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. If the system is 32-bit, you’ll need to download and burn 32-bit version of the tool, otherwise 64-bit version of Standalone System Sweeper will be needed.
Download 32-bit Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper
Download 64-bit Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper
Although the initial download size is 576KB, but atleast 250MB space is needed in order to write Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.
You’ll need to format the USB drive in order to install Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper tool successfully. The tool will give you a warning to format if the USB drive is not empty.
Clicking on Next will take you to the next screen where the tool will start downloading the required components from the Internet. The whole process will go on like this:
- Downloading files
- Processing files
- Formatting USB drive
- Adding files
It will take a while to download the components which is not good for slow Internet connections. Please note that in order to create a clean bootable media of MSSSS, you should always follow the process of creating the bootable recovery media on a clean system. It should not be created on a corrupted or malfunctioning system. Downloading the components in real time will make sure that the latest and updated components are used during the recovery process.
In order to create Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper, you’ll need to have Windows XP SP3 or later including Windows 7.
The leaks about the new Office suite seemed to have dried down when the leaks of the new Windows Operating System, Windows 8 were just flowing every day. But now the news have again turned to Microsoft Office 15. The development of Microsoft Office 15 is still under way and it is not expected to be released some time in the near future but there are some leaked news about a new application in Office 15, Moorea.
We have had a good experience with Microsoft OneNote which takes care of all our notes in one place. Moorea seems to be a step ahead of OneNote. Let’s go to the screenshots. The first one is the Microsoft Office 15 Start Menu items. I have highlighted Moorea in the screenshot:
You can click on the screenshot to enlarge. You can see that the icon of Microsoft Moorea 15 seems like Microsoft Word. This means that even the icon has not been designed for Moorea confirming that it is still in very early stages of development. The next screenshot is the opening screen of Microsoft Moorea 15:
The tagline of Microsoft Moorea seems to be “everything you need in one place…”. The next screenshot sheds more information about Moorea as it will be an all in one Multimedia enabled document builder. The multimedia content can be easily embedded into the document.
The last screenshot displays the navigation models available in Moorea.
There aren’t many details leaked about Moorea but it seems to be an all in one application combining Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and multimedia elements, a competitor to Adobe Flash or something else? only time will tell. The screenshots have been taken from Winbeta.it.
Opera 11 has been updated and the new version is Opera 11.10. While Opera has a far less share in browser market but it’s a very good and reliable browser which takes less resources and is pretty stable. This browser is especially useful for users who have slow internet connections as you can control the loading of images and other elements right from the taskbar and you can also turn Opera Turbo on for browsing under a slow internet connection. The update to Opera brings new features and enhancements to the browser.
The new features of Opera 11.10 include the new Speed Dial 2.0 which is a very popular feature of Opera. Now you can stack unlimited number of sites in Speed Dial. All the thumbnails on the Speed Dial are dynamically updated so you can see the live changes to the sites in Speed Dial. Here’s a video explaining the Speed Dials in Opera 11.10:
Enhancements have been made in Opera Turbo which runs with improved compression making it faster to load websites. Installing plugins like Flash Player has always been troublesome because one had to install the plugins manually if they were missing on one computer but now Opera can download and install the plugins automatically which eases the job of the user very easy. Right now only Flash Player is supported for automatic installation but other plugins will be added in the future.
We have talked about CSS3 features in the newly released Internet Explorer 10 Preview. Opera 11.10 also comes with the support for CSS3 linear gradients and multiple columns. For more details about the technical aspects of Opera 11.10, please see the changelog of Opera.

Modern Operating Systems are coming with 64-bit support and hopefully everything will switch to 64-bit in a short while. Most modern computer processors are 64-bit compatible but if you have a slightly old PC and you want to install a 64-bit Operating System then you’ll have to first confirm if the system is 64-bit compatible or not.
