Some special folders in Windows 8 are meant for specific purposes. For example, Windows 8 will create folders like Downloads, Documents, Music, Videos etc. All these folders have special properties and can be optimized accordingly.
There is a problem in Windows 8 that sometimes one of these special folders will start loading or opening very slowly. The address bar will show the green filling meaning that Windows is still working on loading the contents of the folder. This situation worsens with more files added to the special folder.
So what is the cause of this problem? Actually Windows 7 and Windows 8 customize the special folders according to their content type. For example, the Pictures folder will be optimized for thumbnail viewing for viewing all the pictures in the folder at a glance. The problem of slow opening downloads folder or any other special folder in Windows 8 occurs when Windows assigns the wrong folder type to the special folder.
There are two solutions to this problem. Let’s discuss them one by one.
Solution 1: Changing folder type
- Open the folder which is loading or opening with delay.
- Right click white area of the folder and select Properties.
- Go to Customize tab
- Change the drop down menu under ‘Optimize this folder for’ to "General items".
This will have instant effect on folder loading process. Just refresh view or open the folder again to see the difference.
Solution 2: Changing the default folder location
Although solution 1 is highly recommended and will work most of the times, if it does not solve your issue then you should carry on with solution 2.
- Go to the problematic folder.
- Right click on the white space and go to Properties.
- Go to location tab
- Change the location to the drive other than the system drive.
This will also change the special folder type automatically and thus, solving the problem in hand.
