Windows 8 has completely revamped the notification system of Windows. Windows 7 had a few notification above the system tray while Windows 8 notifications will come on the right hand side of the screen. The notifications will appear for a specified time and then disappear. Sometimes the notifications become annoying and need to be disabled. For example, I have connected my Facebook account with Windows 8 and my Windows Live Messenger is also connected to Facebook. When I’m chatting with my Facebook friends via Windows Live Messenger, I get double notification for each message, one from Windows Live Messenger and the other from Windows 8 messaging app. So it is better for me to disable these types of notifications and this can be done selectively for each app in Windows 8.
Types of notifications in Windows 8
Before going forward and discuss about the actual methods to enable or disable notifications in Windows 8, we will need to know the types of notifications in Windows 8.
Live tiles are notifications within the tiles of Windows 8 Start screen. When you open Windows 8 Start screen, you’ll see live updates on each Windows 8 app. For example, you may see the weather tile which will display the temperature and other weather conditions without actually opening the tile.
Toaster notifications are those which are displayed on screen in the form of a popup. These work for both Modern UI and desktop. These are the most concerning notifications as they will show your new email or a new message etc when they arrive.
Enabling or disabling toaster notifications
There are two ways to disable notifications, one is temporary and the other one is permanent.
The temporary method
This method can be used for quickly disabling toaster notifications in Windows 8. All the notifications will be disabled for a specified amount of time. This can be useful especially when you want to work without distractions or play a game etc.
To disable notifications temporarily, go to Windows Charms bar (WinKey + I) –> Notifications.
You will be given three options:
- Hide for 8 hours
- Hide for 3 hours
- Hide for 1 hour
You can select any option according to your needs. After selecting your option, a timer will be displayed on the Notifications button.
To enable the notifications again, just go to Windows Charms bar and click on the Notifications button again. The timer on the Notifications button will go away.
The permanent method
If you want to disable notifications permanently, you can follow the instructions below:
- Go to Windows Charms bar (WinKey + I) –> Change PC Settings
- Go to the Notifications menu
- On this screen, you will be able to disable the notifications permanently. You can also disable the notifications for each app or for all apps.
Notification fade out time
You can also change the notification fade out time. To adjust the fade out time, just go to the Charms bar –> PC settings –> Ease of Access. Here you can change the notification time duration. The options given are 5, 10, 15 or 30 seconds or 1 or 5 minutes.
