Skype 5.9 has been released today and is available for download. The new release version is Skype 188.8.131.52. Skype is a popular VOIP software which was recently acquired by Microsoft. People can talk and chat with other people using their computers of phones using Skype.
Some new functionality has been added to Skype 5.9 which will help people use Skype with more ease. Let’s talk about some of the new functionality.
Confirmation before a contact can be added to the group
With Skype 5.9, a confirmation message will appear if anyone drags a new contact in the group conversation. This is very useful for mistakenly added contacts to a sensitive group conversation.
Hotkey for taking snapshots during video calls
This is the best feature of Skype 5.9 so far. Now you can use a hotkey for taking snapshots of the video during video calls. You can adjust the hotkey of snapshots by going to Tools –> Options –> Advanced –> Hotkeys.
Improved non-standard International phone number recognition for Australian users
This update is specifically for Australian users. Now the Australian users can use Skype for making International calls by using 011 as the International calls prefix.
Ability to opt-out from silent updates
This is also a good feature introduced in Skype 5.9. Now you can easily opt-out of the future automatic updates of Skype. If you want to stick to a particular version of Skype, you can do so starting from Skype 5.9.
There are several fixes to the issues in Skype 5.8 or earlier. These include fixes for Screen sharing for users even in invisible mode, webcam in use message displaying improperly, changing the country code of your phone numbers in the profile settings, problems with files being received at once etc.
Troubleshooting Note: If you have Skype already installed on your computer, you will probably get the following error if you download Skype 5.9 and try to install it:
“Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel”
Interestingly, Microsoft is still using “Add/Remove Programs” while they have already updated the name to “Programs and Features” in Windows 7. Anyways, you will need to uninstall the previous version of Skype and then install Skype 5.9. This will install the latest version of Skype successfully.
