I have already written about Internet Security suites that work with Windows 8 and the Windows 8 itself includes a basic antivirus called Windows Defender. Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials has been merged into Windows Defender so that it will protect the system from viruses and spyware.
Kaspersky is among the most popular security firms with good antivirus and Internet security suites for Windows. With the release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Kaspersky has also released Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 for Windows 8. Although only the technical preview has been released, it works well in Windows 8 with a few bugs which will be fixed in the coming beta and final versions.
The trial version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 can be used for 90 days (3 months) for free. According to Kaspersky, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 technical preview is fully compatible with Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It is fully integrated with Windows Security Center. So you can control the features of KIS 2013 directly from Windows Security Center.
The default antivirus for Windows 8, Windows Defender, will automatically be disabled when KIS 2013 is installed. So you don’t need to do anything else other than downloading and installing the security suite.
When I installed the security suite on Windows 8, 64-bit edition, it took about 15 minutes to install which is a huge amount of time. Kaspersky needs to look into this and reduce it to less than 5 minutes.
Another important thing to note is that while installing, the installer will ask you to restart the computer. You SHOULD NOT restart it otherwise the installation will fail. Just choose “Restart Later” when asked.
After successful completion of the installation process, you will be taken to the activation screen when you start KIS 2013 for the first time. You may choose “Activate trial version” to continue.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 features
The following protection modules are included in KIS 2013:
Network Attack Blocker
Secure keyboard input
You also get additional tools useful for troubleshooting infected computers like create rescue disk, Microsoft Windows troubleshooting tool, privacy cleaner and browser configuration analysis tool.
If the computer is used by multiple people, you can setup parental controls to limit the usage of computer by different individuals.
Overall KIS 2013 is a great security suite which although takes a long time to install, does not seem to affect the computer performance a lot. Please note that you should never use technical preview or beta products on production systems.
