Microsoft has discontinued Office 2010 after the release of Office 2013 but a number of users are still using Office 2010. This is why Microsoft has not left the Office 2010 users alone but are supporting it by releasing security patches. The latest in the row of updates is Office 2010 Service Pack 2. Microsoft has released the beta version of Office 2010 Service Pack 2 to the public. Now anyone will be able to download and install SP2 from Microsoft’s site.

According to Microsoft Office Updates blog:

As of today, customers can download the beta for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 SP2. In addition to updates for the desktop and server apps, this beta also includes full-product SKUs of SharePoint and related server products, updated to install on Windows Server 2012.

These server products will be available for download:

  • SharePoint Server 2010

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010

  • Search Server 2010

  • Search Server 2010 Express

  • Office Web Apps

  • Project Server 2010

 How to download Office 2010 SP2

The service pack 2 beta is freely available for download but you will need a Microsoft ID in order to access the download links. If you have a Hotmail or Outlook.com account, just visit this link and sign in with your Microsoft ID.

You will need to accept the license agreement and then will be taken to the download page. Microsoft does not give any specific details about what is included in this service pack. The only detail we come to know is this:

Service Packs are the means by which product updates are distributed and may contain updates for system reliability, program compatibility, security and more. SP2 adds improved support for Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10, as well as SharePoint Server 2010 compatibility with Windows Server 2012.

In the downloads section, you will find both 32-bit and 64-bit installers for Office 2010 SP2 beta. The service pack is currently available in two languages: English and Japanese.

You will need to click on “Service Pack 2 Beta for Office 2010 Desktop Applications” link. This will take you to the download details page where you will be able to download different updates related to Service Pack 2. This includes the language packs too.

The beta version of Office 2010 Service Pack 2 will expire on December 31st, 2013. This is exactly when Microsoft releases the final version of Service Pack 2.
